I'm sorry that I've slacked a bit on my blog, but here is some more about my NYC service trip.
Wednesday was a day trip to the Bronx Zoo with the entire day camp. (It was also the day that we misplaced our home church keys and got two parking tickets...) The night before the day camp director had called our leader saying that the day camp staff was feeling a little threatened by our presence - which is totally understandable - a new staff is exciting for kids, but the permanent staff should hold the authority and whatnot. So Tue. night our staff had a little brainstorm meeting about what we would do about this problem. We thought asking what we could do to be the most helpful would be a good start so the next morning we talked to the day camp director and see what we could do to be the most helpful and not step on any toes. We got all of that figured out and had a great day at the zoo! I always love zoos, but I really love going to them with kids that are super excited to see every single animal. It is so fun to see kids get so happy over all the creatures. Our high school campers also really got a taste of what it is like to work with kids and take them off site. It was fun to hear about their experiences (as we were all in different groups) and hear how they discovered the feelings of real responsibility.
After the zoo, we traveled back to day camp for closing and then left for the day. We again stopped to get frozen yogurt (which was really really needed since some of our sandwiches got ruined for lunch because the ice pack bag had leaked onto our chicken salad sandwiches) on our way to the subway station and traveled back to the church for a short nap time.
Wednesday's dinner was pizza on the 3rd floor patio of the church complete with Arnold Palmers. After dinner, we traveled to Time's Square and Rockefeller Center Area. It was so amazing! Time's Square was so busy! There were so many people and lights and moving things and shops and police on horses - whoa! I was so overwhelmed (in a good way) that I couldn't even concentrate to take a picture. (Good thing the campers did - yay facebook picture harvesting!) It was so exciting to see some of the New York sites I had seen on tv/in pictures. It is an amazingly busy and exciting place - I'm having a hard time describing it. We also went into a shop to get souvenirs for our families, friends, and ourselves. Then we continued walking around the Rockefeller Center area and stopped to watch a private party going on there - so jealous! We saw so many amazingly huge and beautiful buildings with nice stores/restaurants inside them. I enjoyed looking into the windows of this particularly fancy restaurant that had the most beautifully ornate architecture on the inside I've ever seen. During our walk we also stumbled upon a really great band (made of college-aged looking students), so we stopped and listened for a while before catching the subway back home.
