Joplin - Day 3, 4, & 5

On Friday, we started our day with breakfast (biscuits and gravy!) and headed out for another day of work. I went with part of the group back to the meal site. (I think I forgot to say in my last post that we had moved an uncountable number of boxes of frozen alfredo the day before) We did odd jobs around the meal site until lunch time where we helped serve the meal to many construction workers. After a chili dog lunch (I could not have alfredo again after moving so many boxes of it the day before haha), we headed to the school warehouse to continue our book unloading and sorting task. All of the books (some old, some new) had been donated and some even had little notes in the inside for their new owners. We also saw some teachers doing some early shopping. I enjoyed to hear their stories. One teacher said her classroom was not damaged in the tornado, but some of her student's homes had so she was there to find some books for her students that they could take home to read.
After an afternoon of book sorting, we headed back to ALCC (after ice cream) for showers, dinner, and devotions. The dinner that night was rather disappointing so it was really good that we had been invited for dessert at our leader's daughter's house! We also drove by the FEMA trailers - they were crazy so many perfect rows of white trailers spotted with cement storm shelters.

Saturday morning it was back to the school warehouse for the whole group. Saturday was the main day for the "sale" so we were there to help the teachers pack up their items and deliver them to their cars. We worked with a lot of volunteers from Washington - it was so cool to see all the different geographic locations that the volunteers came from. It was a long day, but a very rewarding day too. We got to help the kids effected by the tornado through their teachers. All of the teachers were very thankful which made our job easy. It was a rewarding day. When the "sale" was over, we went to an ice cream place called Shakes before going back to the ALCC for showers and devotions. We then went to this yummy Mexican restaurant for dinner!

Sunday we left for home. Overall, the trip was not exactly what I had expected. I think I thought we would be seeing more tornado victims and cleaning up more debris. But I guess I'm not totally sure what I had expected. I am really happy that I went on the trip though. I'm glad I experienced what a mission trip was like - I am interested in going on another sometime. It was neat to see tornado damage up close - they are powerful natural events that is for sure. I think it was a rewarding experience just in a different way than I expected it to be. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know other members of my church and spending time with my Grandma.

(I also discovered the greatness of candy corn mixed with peanuts during the trip)
